History:

Miguel López de Legazpi was the first governor-general of the Philippines and a key figure in shaping the country’s early foundations. In 1571, he established the new city of Manila (distinct from the earlier local polity) and helped develop it into a well-organized urban center. Manila later became the capital of the Philippines and served as the primary hub of trade, government, and administration for centuries.
