History:

Pedro Calungsod was a young Filipino Catholic lay missionary from the Visayas who served alongside Jesuit priests in spreading Christianity in the Mariana Islands (Guam). Known for his faith, courage, and dedication, he helped teach catechism and support the mission despite rising hostility. In 1672, Calungsod was killed while bravely defending his companions and protecting the mission, choosing to stand his ground even in the face of violence. His selfless courage and unwavering belief turned his death into a powerful act of heroism, and he came to be honored as one of the most inspiring Filipino martyrs in history.

He was beatified on March 5, 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and later canonized as a saint on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
